Speaker: Craig Washington |
On
Thursday, April 18, 2002, AEN is proud to have as its speaker, the director
of the Atlanta Gay and Lesbian Center, Inc., Craig Washington.
Founded in 1976, the oldest gay & lesbian organization in Atlanta continues
its commitment in offering a broad range of reliable, beneficial services
that continue to grow and meet the needs of the community. The Center
provides information, support and services to the lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, and questioning people of Atlanta. It is a community center
and common ground dedicated to fostering a strong, healthy, inclusive,
community.
Mr.
Washington will address the need for activism in the LGBT community, the
role of race in our community, and his goals for the Center as it enters
its twenty-sixth year.
At
AEN's March meeting, Robert Spano, the new Music Director of the
Atlanta Symphony Orchestra spoke about the one passion of his life, music.
Minor controversy erupted over a Southern Voice article before Mr. Spano's
visit speculating on his sexual orientation. When asked how he felt about
such speculation in the media, he responded, "At least I know what I am
now. I am openly closeted." The crowd gave an appreciative laugh and moved
on.
The rest of the evening
was devoted to Mr. Spano's plans for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, which
includes a new building. Mr. Spano even left the podium at one point to
serenade the crowd with his piano playing skills. The evening provided
an in depth look at the state of Atlanta's Symphony Orchestra by a man
who's passion for his subject was contagious.
AEN
member and Board member, Bonnie Barton has been appointment Director
of Atlanta Women in Business. Atlanta Women in Business (AWinB) is a local
networking and support organization for women in corporate and professional
positions, as well as the women business owners.
Founded
in 1992, this year AWinB celebrates its 10th year of supporting the Atlanta
metro businesswoman through monthly meetings, and as licensee for the
prestigious ATHENẢ Foundation Leadership Award. AWinB is also the sister
organization of Atlanta's International Business Association.
Bonnie
has served on the AEN board since 2000. She is also president of E.R.I.C.,
