Ending
marriage discrimination
On Thursday,
November 13, AEN's timely speaker was Evan Wolfson, executive
director of Freedom to Marry.
Freedom
to Marry is a gay and non-gay partnership working to win
marriage equality nationwide that launched in January 2003
with the goal of securing a civil marriage breakthrough
in at least one state within five years, and then ending
marriage discrimination throughout the United States.
That
goal was perhaps met when the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial
Court ruled in Goodridge v. Dept. of Public Health
only five days after Mr. Wolfson spoke to AEN. The court's
4-3 ruling stressed the important, intangible protections
and benefits that marriage brings to couples and their children.
The "scarring hardship" caused by the denial of
marriage equality, the court found that government has no
good reason for denying civil marriage licenses and full
equality to same-sex couples. Massachusetts has six months
to fully implement the ruling.
As director
of Lambda's Marriage Project, Evan Wolfson coordinated the
National Freedom to Marry Coalition and led the ongoing
national movement for equal marriage rights for same sex
couples. He was co-counsel in the landmark Hawaii marriage
case, Baehr v. Anderson, which launched the current
nationwide debate on gay marriage. Mr. Wolfson also contributed
his expertise to the team in Baker v. Vermont, the
Vermont Supreme Court ruling that led to the creation of
"civil unions," a new legal marital status for
same sex couples.
Mr.
Wolfson's presented an animated and optimistic talk about
the gay marriage movement in the United States. His engaging
manner and confidence seemed to engage audience members
who might otherwise have been skeptical. He predicted a
storm of protest to come in the wake of any advance on gay
marriage at the state level. That prediction, along with
his confidence of coming victory in the Massachusetts case,
seemed to be prescient.
