February
meeting
Aaron Belkin
Director
Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military
On Thursday, February 19, Aaron Belkin will be AEN's speaker.
Dr. Belkin is the founder and director of the Center for the
Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military at the University
of California, Santa Barbara. The Center promotes the interdisciplinary
analysis of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other
marginalized sexual identities in the armed forces.
Professor
Belkin specializes in civil-military relations and security
studies, with a particular focus on sexuality and the military.
He has served as a member of the Governing Council of the
International Society of Political Psychology as well as the
editorial board of the Journal of Homosexuality.
Prior
to his arrival at UCSB, he was a visiting member of the political
science faculty at Stanford University, a MacArthur Foundation
postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley, and a pre-doctoral fellow
at the Center for International Security and Arms Control
at Stanford. He has published seventeen peer-reviewed journal
articles, chapters, and books, including Counterfactual Thought
Experiments in World Politics (Princeton University Press,
1996, co-edited with Philip Tetlock).
Dr. Belkin's
unique center brings together an interdisciplinary community
of scholars, creating a forum for information exchange and
debate, offering itself as a launching point for researchers
who need access to data and scholarly networks, and supporting
graduate student training.
His talk
at AEN promises to shed light on some of the current research
and what it means for the LGBT community at large.

Atlanta
theatre's fair lady
On Thursday,
January 15, the artistic director of Atlanta's Alliance
Theatre Company, Susan V. Booth, spoke to AEN.
Previously
director of New Play Development at Chicago's Goodman Theatre,
co-artistic director for the City of Chicago's professional
summer theatre and associate artistic director of Northlight
Theatre, Ms. Booth holds numerous directing credits in regional
theatre, and she has held teaching positions at Northwestern
and DePaul Universities, and the School of the Art Institute
in Chicago. She is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta's class
of 2003, serves on the board of Atlanta's Regional Arts
Alliance and is being recognized in 2003 as a "Lexus
Leader for the Arts." Atlanta Magazine also selected
Ms. Booth as "Best Visionary" for 2003.
Ms.
Booth provided an impassioned description of Atlanta's theatre
scene which tended toward the comfortable and familiar when
she arrived in 2001. Ms. Booth made the case for theatre
being an art form to engage not only your heart, but your
mind as well. A night at the theatre should not mean a patron
turns his or her mind completely off for a couple of hours.
Good theatre, she argued, will actively engage the audience
not only through entertainment, but also by provoking thought.
Ms.
Booth has worked to give Atlanta theatre-goers a balance
of the familiar mixed in with productions that provide a
deeper experience for the audience.

Household
memberships
Beginning
this year, AEN is pleased to offer Household Memberships.
When two or more people living at the same address wish
to join AEN, or renew their annual memberships, each person
after the first will receive a $25 reduction in the membership
fee -- so two can join for $125, instead of $150.
Under
the new program, if one person is already a member, and
a second person wants to join, both members will pay for
the next year at the Household Membership rate to synchronize
their renewal dates, and then a reduction in price will
be offered based on the remaining term in the first persons
membership.
Being
an AEN member has many benefits, including reduced price
at monthly meetings; discounts at local businesses; meeting
leaders in business, politics, and the arts; opportunities
for business networking; social events; and more. The Household
Membership program is now an additional way for members
of the LGBT community to gain access to all of AENs
great offerings.
