Do ask, do tell

On Thursday, February 19, Aaron Belkin spoke to AEN.

Dr. Belkin is the founder and director of the Center for the Study of Sexual Minorities in the Military at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The Center promotes the interdisciplinary analysis of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other marginalized sexual identities in the armed forces.

Professor Belkin specializes in civil-military relations and security studies, with a particular focus on sexuality and the military. He has served as a member of the Governing Council of the International Society of Political Psychology as well as the editorial board of the Journal of Homosexuality.

Dr. Belkin's talk focused on the military as a harbinger of full civil rights for minority communities. The armed services were integrated in 1948, several years before the public at large stopped legal segregation through the Civil Rights Movement. Equal treatment in the military has long been a predictor for full acceptance into society. The LGBT rights movement may be different in that treatment of LGBT citizens is further ahead in the general public than the military. With the current fight over same sex marriage, it is possible that LGBT citizens could enjoy equal rights in society at large before experiencing them in the military.

Dr. Belkin's talk was enjoyable and an enlightening look at a fascinating field of study.
