Olympic Champion, Advocate and Inspirational Speaker
In 1992 Mark Tewksbury burst onto the international scene following a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the 100-metre backstroke at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. This gold medal performance, the last one by a Canadian swimmer, capped a remarkable 16-year athletic career which included three Olympic medals, seven world records and a cover appearance on TIME Magazine.
In life outside the pool Mark has remained a great performer. A charismatic and engaging individual, Mark has served as an advocate and spokesperson for various organizations, hosted TV shows, and is frequently sought after as a media commentator. Mark tempers his perspective with a unique mixture of passion, intelligence and frankness. Recently the Globe and Mail awarded Mark a gold medal for his swimming analysis from the Athens Olympic Games.
As an athlete who overcame great odds to win, Mark's athletic accomplishments earned him inductions in the Olympic Hall of Fame (1993) Canadian Sports Hall of Fame (1995) and the International Swimming Hall of Fame (2000). For his active humanitarianism and ethical leadership in the social change movements, Mark was presented an honorary Doctorate from the University of Western Ontario (2001).
A leader who is unafraid to take tough stands, Mark Tewksbury currently resides in Montreal where he is Co-President of the 1st World Outgames, coming to Montreal July 29 – August 5, 2006.
